history: The Yanagis were originally citizens of Seigaku. Renji's father was a financial manager working for the government. He was in charged of one of the building projects for one of the large space stations that Seigaku was planning. The Yanagi family was prominent and proud. Until it came to public notice that Renji's father had been stealing money from the government project for his own personal use. The whole family was forced to flee from Seigaku when Renji was 11 years-old.
Despite being refugees Yanagi found comfortable work in Rikkai, he'd amassed a good deal of wealth from his work in Seigaku and life was easy and well for the family. If you discount the shame. Renji has a terribly strained relationship with his father due to his actions. As a result Renji has a distrust for anyone working in finance, he has an incredible knack for numbers and secretly looks over his father's work to see if he's still crooked as he was in the past. He is, and that just pushes the father and child further apart.
As a child Renji had the luck to see the construction of a space station, not unlike TP5. He developed an immense interest in the engineering of such a massive project. Perhaps the only blessing from his father's treachery was that it gave Renji the chance to be the absolute best in his chosen field. He had been studying engineering since before he fully understood the word, began working when he was only 12. His dislike of his family made him throw himself into his work, by the time he was 14 he was widely appraised as one of the best engineers in Rikkai and at 16 he took extreme steps for his job.
When he turned 16 Renji had his sight altered so that he would be able to see gamma rays. [16 is the legal age for such an operation with parental consent. This kind of surgery is only available to certain members of the population] When he looks at an object he sees more than just light waves, he can see the heat of the object as well. This additional sensitivity allows him to work with extremely delicate machinery with greater accuracy and safety. As a result he sees things on two levels. Since his brain was not naturally made to process in such a way visually his sight actually impaired his normal vision. He kept his eyes closed to keep from straining his mental functions. As a result of the surgery immediately after he had to spend most of his daily life blind, saving his concentration for work. Now that he's older the affects of the operation are less severe on his daily life, he can look at things comfortably without worrying about a migraine to follow or faulted judgment.
He's extremely dedicated to his work and passionate almost to the point to being obsessive. He remembers every job he's ever done and retains information as well as artificial intelligence.
Now 18, despite his youth, Renji has been asked to work on TP5 as head engineer/mechanic. He eagerly accepted his job, moving away from his father and perhaps a chance to be closer again to someone he dearly missed.
Socially Renji can be described as awkward. He's fairly shy and doesn't mingle well with people, preferring to spend his time with machines. He's very aware of the shame of his family and perhaps that affects the way he deals with other people; however, he hides most of his social insecurities under a mask of perfect politeness. He's intensely formal and business like, simply because he doesn't know how to deal with people on a more personal level. He's actually quite sensitive and expressive once you get to know the signs.
Renji will work in the reactor area with the other mechanics and engineers at times, but due to being head engineer will be housed in Blue Section. He has access to all sections except the command deck (which he has access to upon invitation and/or approval at times).
